“Midway is Home” marks the final celebration presented by ARTIFY, an Irrigate Project. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit the handful of outdoor project installations led by local artists. The event, produced in partnership with Poetry for Thought, will also feature indoor spoken word performances by Anna Binkovitz and Hasani Harris, paired with community dialogue, and live music by Davu Seru and Nathan Hanson. Join in this Saturday March 1, 2014 from 1-5pm at 1333 University Ave W, St Paul, MN 55104, corner of Hamline and University Ave. This is a free event and is open to the public.
The ARTIFY place-making project comes to an end after a successful year of engaging community through the arts along the Green Line in St. Paul, Minnesota. Focused on using the arts to create a sense of place in the vacant former Midway Chevrolet used car lot, ARTIFY has sought to create community connectivity through local arts, artists and the people who live, work and visit the area. The theme, “Home is…” focused largely on the re-interpretations of “what makes a place feel like home?” The projects and performances invited the community to engage in this theme along with the topics of affordable housing and homelessness, a priority for non-profit regional housing developer Project for Pride in Living (PPL).
“PPL is pleased to have had the ARTIFY project bring neighbors together and build excitement for the next chapter of the Midway Chevrolet site.” Said Barbara McCormick, PPL Vice President of Housing and Development.
Later this year, PPL will break ground on the Hamline Station project, which includes 108 units of affordable housing, retail and community space. The development will also feature a public plaza, where local art will be displayed as a result of ARTIFY efforts. Hamline Station is scheduled to open in mid-2015.
